Installation and connection of standard Bluetooth Hands free unit and USB on Mitsubishi Lancer X.

In previous article I installed the standard MMCS J-05 car stereo on Mitsubishi Lancer X with CAN box and universal Russian firmware by donnnl.
Generally, I satisfied with given car stereo as for sound, so functionally. But the MMCS J-05 car stereo supports also the connection of Hands free unit of new style and USB. This will allow to realise in a car the loudspeaker mode, phone voice control. as well as listening to music via Bluetooth and USB flash drive. And I really need all of these in my car.
I bought the necessary set for installation from right-hand drive Lancer X (Galant Fortis), the set is second-hand and in very good condition.
For easy reference, this article is represented in 2 versions: text and video at the end.
My Hands free Bluetooth set consists of the following components:1. Hands free Bluetooth unit 8785A025 (firmwared with European firmware, with support of Russian language).
2. Wiring for connecting the unit to the MMCS car stereo.
3. USB port.
4. Microphone with wiring.
5. Buttons for the steering wheel.
6. Moulding with wiring and cut for the button.
Types and versions of Hands free Bluetooth units for Mitsubishi
Firstly, all units are divided into old and new style units.
Hands free Bluetooth units of old style are the simple loudspeaker mode. They do not support Russian language and USB. The connector for connection and number of wires also differ.
Hands free Bluetooth units of new style support Russian language and USB. as well as Bluetooth audio.
Look for the unit of new style, if it is possible of course.
Also, units of new style, depending on the region, are divided into European and Japanese/American.
European units are even units with Russian language support: 8785A026, 8785A036, 8785A046, 8785A050, 8785A052, 8785A056, 8785A062, 8785A074, 8785A076, 8785A084.
Japanese/American units are odd numbers without Russian language support: 8785A015, 8785A021, 8785A023, 8785A025, 8785A035, 8785A045, 8785A049, 8785A051, 8785A055, 8785A061, 8785A073, 8785A075, 8785A083
If you have Japanese/American unit, you can easily firmware it for European firmware and Russian language will appear. Instruction on upgrade of Hands free Bluetooth unit firmware.
Which car stereos support the connection of Hands free Bluetooth
1. Standard car stereos from 8701a351 version and higher.
2. Car stereos on NR-261 firmware:
- do not supports Hands free Bluetooth - MMCS J-01.
- support Hands free Bluetooth of old design, without USB - MMCS J-02, J-03, J-04, R-01, R-02, E-01, E-02, E-03, C-01, P-01, N-01, N-02, N-03, N-04.
- support Hands free Bluetooth of new style, with USB - MMCS J-05, R-03, E-04, E-05, E-06, P-02, C-02, N-05.
3. Car stereos on NR-242 firmware support only Hands free Bluetooth units of new style.
Installation and connection of Hands free Bluetooth on Mitsubishi Lancer X
On before restyling Lancer X, as a rule, all necessary wiring for connection of Hands free Bluetooth unit and microphone is present.
Sometimes there is only a part of wiring, that is why before installing it, check the presence of the wiring. The only thing is that there will be a connector of old design connected for connection of old design unit on before restyling Lancer X. That is why if you buy an unit of new style, one has to change and re-pin the connector.
And on restyled Lancer X, wiring are fully absent, it is necessary to restore it. And it is necessary to pay attention that the wiring of microphone and right and left channels must be shielded.
The unit itself is fastened in the standard place above the glove box. Remove the plastic facing of glove box for its installation and fasten the unit using 2 screws.There will be 11 wires in the connector C-218 of Hands free Bluetooth unit, it is necessary to connect them in connector C-105 of car stereo in accordance with the following scheme:
Pins 1 and 17 are the supply of Hands free Bluetooth unit:Pin 1 is a constant plus, connect to the car stereo connector C-133 pin 11 or you can take the supply from connector C-310 pin 2 of ETACS unit, this is a connector for additional equipment connection.
Pin 17 is a mass, it can be taken from the car's body.
Pins 2 and 16 are data busbar:
Connect pin 2 in pin 1 of connector C-105 of car stereo.
Connect pin 16 in pin 10 of connector C-105 of car stereo.
Pins 8, 22 and 23 are channels outputs and a shield, these wires must be shielded:
Pin 8 is a left channel output, connect it in pin 12 of connector C-105 of car stereo.
Pin 22 is a right channel output, connect it in pin 3 of connector C-105 of car stereo.
Pin 23 is a shield, connect it in pin 2 of connector C-105 of car stereo.
Pins 14, 27 and 28 are a microphone, these wires must be shielded:
Connect pin 14 in pin 2 of microphone connector.
Pin 27 is a microphone shield.
Connect pin 28 in pin 1 of microphone connector.
Pin 15 is switching-on control, connect it in pin 17 of connector C-105.
Microphone is installed in the standard place in ceiling lamp. Lay the microphone wiring from the unit along standard wiring on the right rack and connect in microphone connector.
The USB connector is installed in the special hole in the plastic facing of the glove box. Fortunately, in my case the hole was from the factory and I have to drill nothing. I install the USB connector until it clicks and connect to the unit.Installation of buttons on the steering wheel for Hands free Bluetooth
Now it is necessary to install buttons for control the Hands free Bluetooth system, as well as change the standard moulding to the new one with the cut and wiring for buttons connection.
To do that, unscrew the air bag, unfasten the connectors of air bag, signal, buttons and a volute.
Do not forget to do the mark on steering wheel and shaft to take the steering wheel into its initial state when installing it back.
Change the moulding to the moulding with cut and new wiring for buttons.
Screw buttons on the steering wheel and connect the connector with new wiring to them.
Install the steering wheel back.
By the way, there will an outline from the inner left side on your old moulding and using which you can cut out the hole for the buttons. This is in the case if you do not find the standard moulding with the cut.Activating for the Hands free Bluetooth unit of new style is not required. Activating is necessary only for unit of old design.
Adjustment and capabilities of Hands free Bluetooth system
When first switching on, you probably will have English language, which you can change in the settings.
To do that, call the voice assistant and say the command: Settings --> Language --> Russian --> Yes.Wait till the settings for language changing become operative.
Now there are 2 new buttons USB/Ipod and BT Audio in the list of sound source choice, that allows to listen to music via USB flash drive, Ipod and from the phone via Bluetooth.I.e I do not need the wire for AUX via which I used to listen to music anymore. Also there is a possibility to flick tracks using buttons on the steering wheel, I really needed it when listened to music via AUX.
To make everything operate fully, it is necessary to perform the coupling of car stereo and the phone.
Press button INFO on the car stereo, there is a new button Mobile phone.
Using this menu you can dial phone numbers, look through telephone book, perform coupling with the phone etc.
If during coupling the system requests a password, try to enter one of the standard passwords 0000, or 1234, or 1212.You can switch off the password requirement in the same menu.
After successful coupling, the name of your mobile phone will appear in the list. You can connect up to 10 mobile phones. The last connected mobile phone will connect automatically.
If one press on the phone name, then it is possible delete the phone from the list, listen for the assigned voice tag or record one's voice tag for every phone.
If it is necessary to connect a specific mobile phone, then using the button call voice assistant and say the command mobile phone choice and next say the voice tag of the phone.
It is possible to hear list of all that is supported by this unit saying the command Help.
If for any reasons your commands are identified badly, you can create the voice model of your voice in the settings.
Generally, the identification quality is at the very high level. When testing incoming and outgoing calls, the way in which I hear the other person, and the way in which they hear me is ideal.
And I would like to mention specially the listening to music, it became very convenient now, everything connects automatically, the music plays from the last track, which was played when switching off the engine, there is the mixing function, and it is possible to flick tracks using the buttons on the steering wheel.The Hands free Bluetooth system has many more fine adjustments towards calls and telephone book, that is why I won't describe it in details, you can read in the instruction to the car, there is a link below.

To sum up, the unit of loudspeaker mode supplements ideally the standard MMCS car stereo, allowing to realize in your car the loudspeaker mode, voice control mobile phone, as well as listening to music via USB flash drive and Bluetooth. There is no wires anymore.
